World Porridge Day 2023

Tuesday 10th October 2023 is World Porridge Day and we are inviting you to join in our celebrations by hosting a porridge breakfast for your friends, family or colleagues during the week commencing 9th October.

Perhaps you'd like to invite people to your home, hold an event at work or even encourage a friendly local café to get involved?

Simply provide the porridge and a variety of tasty toppings, and ask for donations to African Children's Fund to support Kenyan Porridge Clubs where 2,500 children in 13 primary schools receive a daily mug of porridge at school to reduce absenteeism caused by children working, scavenging or begging for food on the streets.

Our fundraising target of £225 will provide a mug of porridge to every child support by the Kenyan Porridge Clubs programme.

Food poverty is one of the biggest reasons for school absence in Kenya and this simple programme has seen absenteeism reduce by over 80% in participating schools. What's more, children receiving porridge each day are healthier, perform better in sports and achieve improved examination results, significantly increasing secondary school enrolment.

In addition, school provides so many long-term benefits which transform a child’s future:

  • School provides a safe haven for children at risk of abuse or exploitation on the streets.

  • School teaches children how to build relationships with adults and peers.

  • Schools teach life skills, including personal hygiene and children’s rights.

  • School aids the development of capacities such as concentration and memory.

  • School encourages creativity through play.

Each mug of porridge costs just 9p so for every £9 in donations you receive from your World Porridge Day breakfasts, 100 children will receive a nutritious porridge meal rather than having to work, scavenge or beg on the streets.

Your visitors can either donate cash or you can show them this QR Code so they can make a donation on our dedicated JustGiving page.

We would love to see photos of your Porridge breakfasts so don't forget to tag us in your social media posts on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, and add the hashtag #PenniesForPorridge, or email your photos to us instead.
