Kenya Floods | Kiambu County
We're sending our thoughts and best wishes to all in Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi affected by recent flooding. Kenyan schools were due to resume yesterday after the Easter holidays, but this has been delayed by a week by the Kenyan Government.
At the Joy Children’s Centre in Ruiru, floodwater breached the toilet block, kitchen and dining room yesterday evening. Staff were able to sweep floodwater out of the kitchen this morning so they could light the jiko cooking stoves to provide the children who live on site with a hot porridge meal. Fortunately, floodwater has not yet reached the dormitories and we hope this remains the case.
Elsewhere in Kiambu County, Watoto Kwanza - who run the Porridge Clubs - are monitoring the area as safely as they can. Many of the schools they support in the area around Thika are rural and the roads have been turned into rivers by the incessant rain.
If you'd like to learn more about the wider situation, this BBC News article makes for interesting reading.
With more rain due in the coming days, we'll keep in close contact with our partners to make sure everyone stays safe from harm. Thank you to all our supporters who have been in touch to share well-wishes. Further updates will follow on our social media pages. We very much hope the rain abates soon so the clean-up operation can commence.
