Fairtrade Fortnight - Choose the World You Want

Fairtrade Fortnight returns from 21st February - 6th March 2022 and this year, the Fairtrade Foundation is focussing its activities around the effects of the climate crisis on food supply around the world.

Why does Fairtrade Fortnight matter to African Children’s Fund?

Simply put, it’s also an opportunity to remind ourselves and our supporters that our daily consumer choices have a direct impact on the children our partners support in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

When producers are paid a fair wage and given better rights, there is a much higher chance their children will go to school rather than having to work, scavenge or beg for food.

As well as regular schooling improving a child’s academic and extra-curricular attainments, creativity and relationship building - all of which lead to improved chances of prosperity and self-sufficiency into adulthood - school attendance also equates to safety. Children are significantly safer in school where they are less susceptible to abuse and exploitation, than they are at home by themselves or on the streets.

In the areas around Thika where many of the Kenyan Porridge Club schools we support are located, low-paying industries including flower farms and tea plantations are prevalent. It is widely reported that workers’ wages in both industries are insufficient and while a growing number of Collectives - including those supported by Fairtrade projects - are leading to improvements, they remain among the lowest paid in Kenya.
